Join us for a special Reef Check Evening with
Cyndi Dawson
April 9 th, 2008
Stretching over 1,000 miles, California's coastline is the gateway
to a unique and often under-appreciated marine ecosystem. Unfortunately,
similar to reefs around the world, the rapid growth of California's
population, coastal development, pollution, and overfishing have
placed increasing demands on our nearshore resources. Many organisms
that were previously common in high numbers are now almost gone.
Reef Check California
aims to build a network of informed and involved
citizens who support
the sustainable use and conservation of our nearshore marine resources.
To accomplish this, volunteers will be trained to carry out surveys
of nearshore reefs providing data on the status of key indicator
species.
Upon certification, divers have many opportunities to take part
in surveys aboard planned boat charters as well as planned beach
dives. We encourage our volunteers to plan and execute their own
surveys as it fits into their schedules.
Reef Check also has an
interactive online forum where volunteers can communicate to
plan surveys, find buddies for fun dives, and sign up to take part
in many of the additional free courses and events that RC provides. Reef Check is a great way to give back to the nearshore reefs
that we enjoy and use so much, and it's a lot of fun!
