Dive the Metridium Fields

On the west end of San Carlos beach a series of pipes run out underwater. In the cannery days, these sucked the sardines in from the boats to the canneries. At the end of one of these pipes is a field of the huge white anemone, metridium giganteum. Swimming over and around these is a breathtaking experience.

For our second dive, we will explore the pipes, a diverse ecosystem rich in invertebrates and a great way to practice natural navigation.

Meet on the lawn at the north end of San Carlos Beach near the restrooms. The parking lot requires quarters/credit cards. Have your gear unloaded by 8:30 AM. The earlier you are there, the better your parking. Call Wallin’s (591-5641) to reserve your spot.

Cost: $10 (free to Kelptomaniacs).

Let’s go diving!
