2006 Pumpkin Dive

Saturday October 28, an intrepid crew set out to prove how safe it was to mix fruit, surge, low vis, and knives together. It was a success and here are the pix to prove it! Several decided the better part of valor was to carve their pumpkins back at the table. We had a special guest come in and show us how to do it - Annika. The Amazing Anaka followed up her carving expertise and made everyone say 'trick or treat' to get a mystery flavored lollypop.

The sky was clear blue with not a single cloud the entire time we were there. The water was a warm 54 degrees. Visibility varied from 25 feet to less than the distance from your shoulder to your hand. Fun stuff.

Two groups of four set out - one to the middle reef and one to Cannery Point. The Cannery Point group worked carefully yet feverishly to carve the ultimate statement of jack-o-lantern-ness and you can see the results. One group coming back into the cove in less visibility than a sauna was surprised by the ghostly shape of a mola coming out of the murk. We all thought to ourselves: Seal? Diver? Then the tumbling remains came into view and we could see it was a mola rolling on into eternity. Yikes!

This surprise caused one of our divers to lose his pumpkin right out of the mesh bag (actually it came out of the mesh bag I loaned him with the side missing, but I don't want to tell him that).

After lunch comparing notes and jokes we headed out for another dive. Our second dive was a terrific hide and seek with a seal that lasted the full time of the dive in the middle reef. Yee-haw!

Everyone had a good time and are looking forward to the next time we all get together.

Congratulations to Eric Ammerman and Lisette Mateucci for co-winning the Pumpkin Carving Event. Each will get 50% off their next boat dive at Wallins on the Escapade.

Honorary mention to Marcus Fallen whose pumpkin is rolling around somewhere out there with the mola.
